To Be a “Tool”

What do we mean to say when we call someone a “tool”?

“Tool” is one of those words that, when repeated 5 times in a row, sounds pretty silly. But the word in its colloquial use describes a particular personality type that we intuitively recognize but don’t always have a sharp definition for.

“Tool” is shorthand for “has a thoroughly undeveloped inner life.” To be a tool is to not understand that what you’re doing isn’t as smooth/cool as you think it is. The difference here between being confident and being a tool is in the amounts of fucks given about what other people think. Tools care a lot about what others think, which is why something intuitively feels off whenever they do anything.

I love overanalyzing things.
