Querying Your Memory

//

I’m realizing that my creativity is best served by treating my memory as a collection of spreadsheets.

When we are exposed to new ideas and knowledge, there seems to be a couple high-level things going on simultaneously:

  • Soaking in new information, figuring out which “spreadsheet” to store it in.
  • Searching previous memories to see which “spreadsheets” might reference this new information.

The first part is what a lot of us have been trained to do through our traditional forms of schooling/education. But it’s the second part that I think brings about genius, insight, big ideas. Connecting seemingly unrelated thoughts to come up with something amazing.

If we can strengthen the links between these spreadsheets, these distinct buckets of knowledge, our memory will become weaponized.
